Elections Around The World

Hi Indonesia! This year is a democratic year. Have you elected your representatives in the election view weeks ago? I'm sure you already done. Besides Indonesia, many countries held Election Day this year, such as India and Afghanistan. FYI, India and Indonesia have first and third place as the biggest democratic power of the world. In this chance,  I'll tell you unique things that I've ever heard about election around the world. Some countries arrage election with different and uncommon way . Let's see from India. In this year for the first time , India make " none of the above" coloumn in their voting cards. It means people can be abstainers or Indonesian called it as "white group" or "golongan putih". This is interesting, isn’t? Although people do not choose one of the existing representative candidates, but their voices can not be purchased, like the case in Indonesia. In addition, candidates who register are also unique. There politician named Hitler and Frankenstein are competing in the Indian election. Of course, Hitler denied that he had anything to do with Adolf Hitler of Germany. But not every country and area have rights to choose their representatives freely even in the election. North Korea, for example, only have a pair of president and vice president candidate to elect. So the choices are only agree or disagree to accept they as the leaders. They say, if a person disagree with the candidate, she or he will be killed.

In Irian Jaya , Indonesia , we have  Noken tradition, a system that commonly used by the people in the mountains of Papua. The people let traditional leaders to represent them to choose the representative, so one village have one decision. In this system , the secret principle no longer applies. Because the system is to respect big men before, where citizens must abide by an agreement which has been created and is led by the leader. Noken still exist in some mountainous areas in Papua. It’s because geographical factors and spreading of communities in the mountainous regions or their live without access to information, transportation, or communication. I think this is a primitive way to do though we look at the reasons. We have to choose our leader directly in order to built a better life.
Of course, we also have to know visions and missions of the candidates first. Then make a good decision depens on our heart, just like we do in FKIP last time, elected our Student President. Don’t forget to elect our real president in next! Remember this, your choice is important. Let's built a better Indonesia!
