Hi readers, how are you? I’m Lourensia. At this time, I’ll share you
about how people around the world communicate with each other, especially how
do they greet their partners. In the last time, I’ve told you about body
language around the people. You can read it here. Greet someone sometimes isn’t
simple as we think. There are a lot of people who think that it’s quite easy.
We can greet someone with give a sweet smile. It’s better to say “Hallo” or “Assalamualaikum” and have a small talk. But
the problem is existing when we start to greet people from another culture.
India people say “Namaste” to greet each others. It’s a common greeting between
Indians. They usually say this word with coverage-hands –which means both of
the palm are touch each other—and place them in front of the chest. Indians don’t touch people around them when they
meet. It becomes culture of their life. This body language is called as Añjali Mudrā or Pranamasana. Well, Japanese people give their respect with “Ojogi” or bow their bodies.
Different with Indonesians and Europeans, Japanese people commonly don’t shake
each other hands, hugging, or the others touched-body language. The best
distance to face to face in their community is one meter. Maori people in New
Zealand nudge their partner’s nose and forehead with theirs and say “Kia Ora” which
means “I hope you always healthy”. Hongi means exchange the breath. Maorians
believe when they exchange breath they already be a unity.
If you think
that it’s strange greetings, you must be surprised
with what Tibet people do. In Indonesia, stick out the tongue
is an impolite behavior, but they do it in Tibet to greet somebody. It’s quite
awkward if Tibet people do that in a common culture which can’t accept this. So
because of that, knowing other’s cultures is a must. If you want to know about
