Newborn Traditions Around The World

Hi bloggers, welcome to my new posting. Every culture also has their own tradition to celebrate something happened in their place. In the last time I’ve wrote about harvest tradition in the world. You can read it by click here. Today, I’ll tell you about newborn traditions in some countries which are unusual and interesting. Let’s start with Egyptians. To celebrate the 7th day of the baby, they held Sebooh. Following the tradition, a mother put her baby - clothed in a white robe- in a large white sieve and shakes it gently to help the newborn become accustomed to the vagaries of life. They also put the baby on a blanket with a knife on his chest, while the guests are spreading seeds, gold, and gift around him. All of them are symbol of good wishes for the baby.

Meanwhile, Chinese people belief that the first one month after birth is most meaningful part in human life. So they arrange
the Full Moon ceremony for the infant. The guests give many kind of gift and the parent does the same to them. The types of gifts vary from place to place, but eggs dyed red are usually the most popular gift, probably because in Chinese culture eggs are a symbol of the changing process of life. Their round shape is the symbol of a harmonious and happy life, while the red color is a sign of happiness. Armenians also have a newborn tradition, called Agra Hadig.

They put the baby on the floor surrounded by symbolical things like a tape measure, a stethoscope, a spatula, a book and other objects. Then parents push the baby to choose one of them. They believe that whatever object which the baby has chosen would symbolize his/her future. For example, if a boy chooses a tape measure, then it means that he'll be an architect or an engineer. Of course, only time will tell. While in Indonesia the guest should give the new mother gift, Brazilians do the opposite. In Brazil, mother prepares a basket with souvenirs that are given to each person who comes to the hospital when the baby is born. Usually, the gift is a small one, such as candies, fridge magnets, customized notepads, sachets, and even tiny bottles of perfume, all of them are chosen by the mother before the baby is born. Most of the time there's also a message providing the baby's name and thanking them for visiting. If you want to know more about newborn traditions around the world, please go
